2。5/5Swerves between bits I quite liked and bits I didn't care about at all。 Genuinely baffled as to why she doesn't just translate the word 'shit' into English when literally the entire book is what we can assume is translated Romanian - I sympathise if we're talking about titles or culturally specific ideas, but a swearword? Also kinda felt that the F/F pairing was a bit underdeveloped, would've liked them to spend more time together before it was literally read as being the protagonist's fate 2。5/5Swerves between bits I quite liked and bits I didn't care about at all。 Genuinely baffled as to why she doesn't just translate the word 'shit' into English when literally the entire book is what we can assume is translated Romanian - I sympathise if we're talking about titles or culturally specific ideas, but a swearword? Not gonna lie I thought this book was gonna be terrible but to be honest I actually loved this book, its like Dracula but told in the pov of the girls, I loved It and the darkness if this book, its like bride of Dracula but with a bit of a dark edge, never read books by this author and the only reason I read this was cause of the blurb and the cover lol glad I did read this though so well done

3,5 ☆ The story rounded up quite fast at the end。 But it was a nice story and fresh perspective and prequel on the old tale。

I did really enjoy this book though。 I hope the Bellatrix series gets more instalments as it’s a great idea and I would be interested to read more。 。。。more

Thirty-fifth sapphic book read in 2021。Tragic and horrific, with a touch of gay。 Overall? Okay。 Slow-paced, character-based, a bit thin around the edges。 Nothing astounding, but it passed the time。Trigger warnings: ethnic cleansing, racism, sexual assault。

Very well written story about twin sisters facing the hardships of being taken as servants and meeting a certain supernatural icon but there was little of the supernatural and not a lot of substance。

I stumbled upon The Deathless Girls completely by accident, having never read any of Hargrave's writings previously and knowing nothing about her as an author, but intrigued by the concept of the novel and the characters at the centre of it all。 That intrigue compelled me to read on even when the second act of the novel seemed to falter and stall, but the best way I can describe how I feel now that I have made it to the end of Lil and Kizzy's tale is。。。 conflicted。Hargrave writes with the confid I stumbled upon The Deathless Girls completely by accident, having never read any of Hargrave's writings previously and knowing nothing about her as an author, but intrigued by the concept of the novel and the characters at the centre of it all。 That intrigue compelled me to read on even when the second act of the novel seemed to falter and stall, but the best way I can describe how I feel now that I have made it to the end of Lil and Kizzy's tale is。。。 conflicted。Hargrave writes with the confidence of a historical academic about the customs of the travellers in medieval Eastern Europe which makes the story feel very grounded - like a story passed down from generation to generation。 She also has an amazing talent for descriptive imagery that stirs the imagination and carries you along with the story。But on the other hand, character development is practically non-existent。 Outside of Lil and Kizzy we don't really get to learn about the background stories of any of the secondary characters - they are but pawns, used to move our protagonist on her journey like the NPCs in a computer game。 And similarly, the villains feel signposted, completely opposite in every way to the presentation of Lil and Kizzy down to the ying and yang of the twins' colouring compared to the boyar's people, with no redemption opportunity and feeling very much like the boss to be defeated at the end of the game's level before progression to the next chapter can happen。 Does Lil herself undergo a hero's transformation? I think that would very much depend on your interpretation, but to me, the answer is no。 She is the same person at the start of the novel as she is at the end, still in Kizzy's shadow, still one step behind, and the progress she makes (view spoiler)[exploring her sexuality and falling in love with Mira (hide spoiler)] is completely undone by the closing moments。The big boss at the end is foreshadowed with all the subtlety of a brick throughout the novel。 Built up to be a terrifying, depraved monster with no humanity, Dracul is to be feared, revered and reviled。 His very name spoils the crops, sickens cattle and spreads dread like wildflowers。So why then, when we finally get to meet him on the page, does it feel like an anti-climax? Dracul himself appears in perhaps one scene, but he does not command the stage。 Our attention only briefly settles on the strongest, most threatening character in the room before being redirected, where he seems to slink off like a disinterested terrier。 His temper is deadly - or so we are told。 We do not experience it。 His rage, his fury becomes the lapping of a wave on the beach when it ought to be a tsunami。 Contrary to our expectations, there is no big battle and the sacrifice is (view spoiler)[Lil's, and Lil's alone when she decides to give up her life and happiness to be by her sister's side for eternity (hide spoiler)]。It feels like a whimper of an ending instead of a bang。Everything at the end of the story is wrapped up very quickly and neatly in a bow, almost as though Hargrave was reaching the upper limits of a word count and was loathe to cut details from any earlier part of the story, and so her hand was forced into tying up loose ends with an appendix。 I feel there were certainly parts that needed further exploration after the final chapter, a further story to be told, which was cut off in its prime because the author got tired of playing with the dolls in this particular dollhouse。 It's a shame, because the premise holds such promise and is a story I can easily see making its way to the big (or small) screen in the future。 。。。more
